Definition
An acanthocyte is a red blood cell with thorny, spiky projections on its surface. These irregular shapes are caused by changes in the cell membrane. Unlike other abnormal red blood cells, the spikes on acanthocytes are unevenly distributed and have varying lengths. They often appear in specific medical conditions such as liver disease or certain genetic disorders. The name comes from the Greek word for 'thorn.' Think of them as looking like little sea urchins under a microscope.
