Definition
An Egyptian onion, also known as a tree onion or top onion, is a peculiar plant that grows bulbils (small bulbs) at the top of its stalk instead of flowers. These bulbils can be used to propagate new plants. Think of it as an onion wearing a crown of baby onions. Unlike ordinary onions, Egyptian onions provide a double harvest: both the underground bulb and the aerial bulbils. The bulbils can be eaten fresh or pickled. They add a zesty flavor. The origin is debated.
