Definition
The genus "Leiopelma" consists of several species of primitive frogs endemic to New Zealand. These frogs are relics from an ancient lineage, exhibiting traits lost in most modern frog families. They're small, terrestrial, and prefer damp forest habitats. Lacking external eardrums (tympana) and vocal sacs, they communicate differently. Their tadpoles develop in streams or under rocks. Conservation efforts focus on protecting their fragile habitats.
