Definition
A haemoproteid is a parasitic protozoan belonging to the family Haemoproteidae. These parasites primarily infect birds and reptiles, residing within their red blood cells. They are transmitted by blood-sucking insects other than mosquitoes, such as biting midges or louse flies. Infections are often asymptomatic or cause mild disease in their hosts. Think of it as a bird's version of a malaria parasite, but with different insect vectors. They represent a distinct group of blood parasites.
