Mutillidae, also known as velvet ants, are actually wingless female wasps. The males have wings and look like typical wasps. Velvet ants are known for their dense, velvety fur and bright colors, often red, orange, or black. They are solitary insects and are not social. Their sting is extremely painful, earning them the nickname 'cow killers.' Think of them as the tough-looking loners of the wasp world – beautiful but packing a serious punch. They are parasitoids, laying their eggs in the nests of other insects.
