Definition
Velvet ants are actually wingless female wasps belonging to the family Mutillidae. The males have wings, but the females resemble hairy ants. They are known for their dense, velvety fur and bright warning colors, often red, orange, or black. Velvet ants are solitary insects, not social like true ants. Their sting is notoriously painful, earning them the nickname 'cow killer.' Think of them as the fashionistas of the insect world β rocking bold colors and packing a serious punch! πͺ They are parasitoids, laying their eggs in the nests of ground-nesting bees and wasps.
