Definition
An otter shrew is a semi-aquatic mammal found in Central Africa, belonging to the family Potamogalidae. They resemble otters in appearance, with streamlined bodies and dense fur. However, they are more closely related to tenrecs and golden moles. Otter shrews have flattened tails used for propulsion in water. They are nocturnal and feed on aquatic invertebrates and small fish. These elusive creatures are an important part of African river ecosystems. Think of otter shrews as a blend between an otter and a shrew, but found only in Africa!
