Definition
Potamogalidae is the scientific family name for the African otter shrews. These mammals are semi-aquatic, resembling otters but are more closely related to tenrecs. They are found in Central and West Africa, inhabiting rivers and streams. Otter shrews have dense fur and a flattened tail, which helps them swim. They are nocturnal and feed on invertebrates and small fish. Potamogalidae comprises only a few species. They represent a unique evolutionary lineage adapted to aquatic life.
