Definition
Sisyridae is a family of insects commonly known as spongeflies or spongillaflies. Their larvae are unique because they feed exclusively on freshwater sponges. These insects are found near bodies of water where sponges grow. The larvae have specialized mouthparts that allow them to pierce and consume sponge tissue. Adult spongeflies are less frequently observed than their larvae. The family Sisyridae represents a specialized ecological niche. It plays a part in controlling sponge populations.
